Bucyrus Man Faces Multiple Charges After Armed Domestic Incident |
Suspect Allegedly Assaults Officers Following Arrest |
A 33-year-old Bucyrus man is facing serious charges after an alleged domestic violence incident escalated into an armed confrontation with law enforcement.
On Saturday evening, Bucyrus police responded to a domestic violence call on the city's north side. While en route, officers received a separate 911 call from the south side, where a woman reported that her ex-boyfriend, armed with a rifle, was attempting to break into her home. The residence was occupied by the woman, her current boyfriend, and her 9-year-old child.
Officer Devin Wireman was dispatched to the south side incident, with assistance from the Crawford County Sheriff's Office. Upon arrival, Officer Wireman found the suspect, identified as Daniel Hammond, actively trying to enter the residence through the front door. Hammond initially complied with orders to get on the ground and was taken into custody without further incident upon the arrival of deputies. A loaded .50-caliber hunting rifle was discovered nearby.
However, during the transfer from a Bucyrus Police Department cruiser to a deputy's vehicle for transport to the Crawford County Justice Center, Hammond managed to reposition his handcuffs to the front and became physically combative, striking officers with his hands and feet.
Hammond has been charged with aggravated burglary (Felony 1), domestic violence (Misdemeanor 1), and assault on a police officer (Felony 4). The case has been submitted to the Crawford County Prosecutor's Office for further review.
This incident underscores the dangers law enforcement officers face when responding to domestic violence situations, which can quickly escalate into life-threatening encounters. |
