Mansfield Celebrates Opening of Trimble Road Tunnel and B&O Bike Trail Connector |
New Infrastructure Enhances Community Connectivity and Safety |
Mansfield residents gathered on Friday to celebrate the completion of the new tunnel under Trimble Road and the 1.1-mile connector path linking the B&O Bike Trail to the city's sidewalk network.
The $3.3 million project aims to provide a safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians beneath the busy Trimble Road, enhancing connectivity and promoting outdoor activities.
Local cyclist Ruthie Good expressed her excitement, stating, "We've been waiting impatiently." She regularly bikes about 22 miles once or twice a week and looks forward to utilizing the new path.
The project was funded through a combination of federal, state, and local resources, including approximately $1.45 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. The Richland County Foundation contributed $200,000 to the tunnel project.
Mansfield Mayor Jodie Perry highlighted the collaborative effort, noting that without support from various funding sources, the project would not have been possible.
The tunnel is equipped with lighting and security cameras to ensure safety for all users. The 10-foot-wide concrete trail winds through land owned by the Western Land Conservancy and OhioHealth, both of which supported the project by allowing construction on their property.
With the connector now complete, the Richland County Park District, which operates the B&O Trail, will take over its maintenance. The Richland B&O Trail spans 18 miles, connecting four of Richland County's communities from North Lake Park in downtown Mansfield to the Village of Butler.
This development is part of a broader initiative to enhance Mansfield's infrastructure and promote a more active, connected community. |
