Community Feedback Leads to Preservation of Downtown Parking Spaces |
Park National Bank has decided to withdraw its proposal to construct a new office on Mansfield's Municipal Parking Lot, following significant feedback from local businesses and residents.
Chris Hiner, the bank's Mansfield regional president, stated, "Our proposal was made with the sincere intent to invest in Mansfield’s future and contribute to the vitality of our downtown."
He emphasized that the decision came after thoughtful consideration of community concerns, particularly regarding the importance of preserving existing parking in the downtown area.
The initial plan involved developing a new office on the 1.42-acre lot at the corner of Fourth and Main Streets.
In return, Park National Bank intended to donate its current downtown building, valued at $1.28 million, to the Mansfield Community Improvement Corporation.
The proposal also included a $130,000 donation to support the development of additional parking in the Carrousel District.
However, the plan faced immediate opposition from downtown merchants and residents.
On the same day the bank announced its decision, a protest was held by nearly 50 individuals concerned about the potential loss of approximately 90 parking spaces.
Joyce Wells, CEO of Richland Carrousel Park, organized the rally and expressed her concerns about the timing and impact of the proposal.
She highlighted the ongoing Main Street Corridor Improvement project and the additional strain that new construction would place on local businesses.
Mayor Jodie Perry acknowledged the community's concerns and admitted that the rollout of the proposal could have been handled better.
She emphasized the importance of finding common ground and crafting a plan that works for all stakeholders.
In response to the feedback, Park National Bank decided to step back from the initiative.
Hiner stated, "We’ve heard clearly from our community that maintaining the current parking lot is a priority, and we respect that."
He reiterated the bank's commitment to serving the community and supporting solutions that enhance economic development while reflecting the community's voice.
Park National Bank will continue to operate from its current downtown office at 3 N. Main St.
Hiner expressed gratitude for the open dialogue and the passion the community shows for its future, stating, "This is what makes Mansfield special, and we’re honored to be part of it." |
